From the experience we have gained after many tooth whitening treatments, here is our ultimate guide to getting a whiter smile!
1) Clean your teeth from bacterial plaque at least twice daily:
Plaque is a layer of bacteria that forms on top of our teeth. Bacterial plaque forms a layer which is impervious to mouth washes, however correct tooth brushing technique and flossing are highly effective at removing this layer. The longer this layer is allowed to remain on the teeth the higher the chances of tooth discolouration, decay and gum disease.
2) Get your teeth professionally cleaned:
Visit your dentist or hygienist prior to doing any tooth whitening. Any surface stains or tartar should be professionally cleaned. If any tooth decay is present it should be managed accordingly. This process often improves the overall colour of the teeth, however we can go a step further.
3) Professionally whiten your teeth:
Once your teeth are clean and healthy it is possible to consider tooth whitening. This is a process by which internal stains that form within the enamel can be removed. This process reduces the yellowness from the teeth giving them a whiter and brighter appearance.
From the many treatments we have carried out, our recommendation is to use dentist supervised whitening trays with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels. With properly fitting trays and the correct dosages this is a safe and effective treatment for tooth whitening.
Firstly a whitening tray needs to be custom made for your mouth. This is usually made from an impression of the teeth. The trays are thin, soft and clear for maximum comfort in the mouth.
Your dentist will give you your custom tray and gels prescribed according to your personal needs. Different gels will have a different duration of effect. The quicker the duration of effect the higher the chances of developing tooth sensitivity.
For this reason our recommendation is to use between 10% and 16% carbamide peroxide gels. This gel slowly releases hydrogen peroxide over a 6-8 hour period. This slow release provides effective tooth whitening while heavily reducing the risk of sensitivity.
For the first treatment, the trays are normally worn at night during sleep for 1-2 weeks. The advantage of whitening trays is that the treatment can be repeated and extended. The trays can be reused to maintain or enhance the whitening effect over time.
The higher the consumption of tooth staining substances, like tea, coffee, red wine or smoking, the chance of colour relapse will increase. Therefore tooth whitening can be done at regular intervals to combat these effects.
4) Maintenance:
One of the most common questions I am asked is "how long will the whitening effect last?"
For some patients the effect will last for many years, while for others the effects will last a few months. Here are the most common reasons why:
1) Frequent intake of tooth discolouring agents like tea, coffee, red wine or smoking:
Reducing the intake of such substances will have a considerable effect on how long the tooth whitening effect will last. Drinks that have the potential to cause tooth staining can be taken with a straw, this reduces the surface contact with the teeth and reduces the risk of discolouration.
2) Inconsistent oral hygiene:
If plaque is not cleaned off the teeth regularly, it will cause tooth discolouration. Make sure you brush your teeth thoroughly for 2 minutes in the morning and 2 minutes in the evening before bed. Flossing is highly recommended for removing plaque deposits between teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach.
3) Consumption of acidic drinks:
The high consumption of acidic drinks like soft drinks or energy drinks, weakens the tooth enamel and causes it to dissolve. When the outer layer is worn away teeth become yellower and more brittle. It is recommended to consume soft drinks during meal times and avoid frequent sipping throughout the day. Using a straw will also minimise tooth contact is beneficial.
4) Genetics:
The specific structure of teeth and saliva has an impact on how resistant teeth are to staining. Speak to your dentist to see how best to manage your specific situation.
